Personality:
At once Shiki Tohno's originator and a collection of discarded parts, at once bodily instincts and the subconscious mind, at once the death drive and libido—the nature of Shiki Nanaya's very existence is complicated. Called a "blood-thirsty ghost" by his own would-be killer, what began as an ingrained knowledge of his demon hunter heritage has grown instead into an embodiment of the darkest desires repressed within Shiki Tohno's mind. And yet, despite—or, more likely, because of—this insubstantial nature, there is very little that concerns Nanaya less than philosophical questions of the worth or purpose of an existence such as his.

To hear Nanaya explain matters for himself, he knows exactly why he lives: to kill. Death is a constant preoccupation for him, and he speaks of it with the casualness of any teenage boy discussing his favorite way to waste time. Whether that death is someone else's, or his own—well, to Nanaya, that hardly matters. A phantom like himself holds only one purpose, and that purpose isn't to live a long and peaceful life. It renders him into a bizarrely implacable foe for anyone unfortunate enough to catch his murderous fancy; when all he has to lose in death is the chance to take even more lives, even seemingly unbeatable odds aren't enough to dissuade him from shooting his shot.

It's a fixation that renders even the most pleasant possible interaction with him into a morbid affair—but, of course, Nanaya doesn't care about social graces or others' perceptions of him at all. He addresses his social betters in the same insouciant manner that he would an outcast on the street, and even in the heat of a life-or-death struggle, he sighs and rolls his eyes and pokes fun at superior combatants' shortcomings. It gives him a vaguely smooth-talking, largely sarcastic manner that renders it almost impossible to discern his rare instances of sincerity. Even quite literally holding his life in your hands won't save you from his careless nonchalance; White Len, the spirit that sustains his existence in a body separate from Shiki Tohno's, complains often of his disrespectful attitude toward her. Of course, it might be foolish to expect anything else, given the strength of Nanaya's pride; he likes to boast that opponents would need an extra arm to keep up with the speed and skill of his knifework, and though he acknowledges the superior strength of the supernatural beings that surround him, he nevertheless claims them to be inferior in their capacity as killers.

This devil-may-care attitude may, at times, disguise the true depravity Nanaya's obsessions. Lust for violence isn't all that lurks suppressed within the subconscious mind, after all—and through the intermingling of these urges within his consciousness, for Nanaya, hunger for bloodshed and desire for sex are tightly intertwined. The connection runs strong enough that the first time Nanaya's desires overtake Shiki Tohno's mind, he describes the ecstasy of cutting a beautiful woman's body into two dozen pieces as nearly enough to make him ejaculate. It's a thread that reveals itself whenever Shiki Nanaya's instincts rise to the surface, and even after Nanaya has been granted existence separate from Shiki Tohno's mind; in place of duty to his forgotten bloodline or even simple entertainment, lust drives Nanaya's actions, and he frames the act of killing in lascivious terms.

Pleasure-driven as his motivations are, the spontaneity that likewise undercuts his easygoing mannerisms should come as no surprise. Knowing that the time granted to him by his transient existence might at any moment run out, Nanaya invests no thought to the long-term consequences of his actions; instead, where he sees his chance to have a little fun, he takes it. When he notices strange activity within Misaki Town, he leaves White Len's territory to take advantage of the chaos, all without hesitation or second thought or taking time to do more than leave her a brief note—and all in spite of the fact that spending too long apart from her will cause his ephemeral body to deteriorate and eventually dissipate altogether. Even when he forms a compact with another being to sustain his physical form in her place, Nanaya can't stay his murderous hand long enough to receive any real benefit from the agreement, quite literally stabbing them in the back the first time the impulse arises.

No matter how thoughtless the decision, though—once Nanaya has set his course, his pursuit of its ends remains unyielding. Even with his body quite literally falling apart, he refuses White Len's orders to return home; he would sooner kill or be killed than stand down from his hunt for a particular target, and he declares as much, informing her of his intent to cut, stab, and slice his way through her if she continues to stand in his way. He tackles obstacles with the same implacability with which he would challenge any other foe, regardless of the odds of his success or the wisdom in testing his luck against them. It's a tendency that stands in odd incongruity with the sense of detachment he displays even in those same moments, but... When you care nothing about moral standards, the effect your actions will have on others, or even whether you survive long enough to see the end of the night, it would be accurate to call any momentary impulse the most important thing in your world.
